CHILD HUNGER ENDS HERE! BLOGGER CORRESPONDENT

If you’ve been around this blog for long, you are probably aware that I believe that we as couponers have a unique ability to impact those who are hungry or in need.  We know how to maximize our spending in a way that our dollars have much more buying power than the average dollar bill found in the average wallet.

What I think is easy to forget is how close we are to hunger.  Here are a few stats to bring this point home:

  • In 2009, 17.2 million children under the age of 18 are living in food insecure households compared to 16.7 million in 2008.
  • That means that nearly one in four children in the United States (23.2%) live in food insecure households.

One in four children? It hardly seems possible, but it is reality in America.

That’s why I am so honored to be a part of the ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Ends Here campaign.  ConAgra Foods has teamed up with Feeding America (the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity) to ask consumers to act now by taking part in a new initiative to fight child hunger.

I will have more to share with you in the weeks ahead about some exciting ways that YOU too can be involved in the campaign against child hunger.

I’d like to kick this series off with an invitation for all of my readers: On Saturday, March 19, 2011,  NBC will broadcast a 30 minute special starting at 7 pm EST hosted by Al Roker and Natalie Morales.  Child Hunger Ends Here: A Special Report will highlight the personal stories of families struggling with hunger and discuss how Americans can work together to help end it.

During the special, viewers can opt to participate in an online event that will shed additional light on the issue of child hunger. By following the hashtag #ChildHungerEndsHere on Twitter during the broadcast, viewers can ask questions from an expert panel and learn about ways to get involved.  You can RSVP for the Twitter chat here.

Note: The special will air in select markets. Check your local listings for show times.

I am looking forward to watching this special.  I know it will broaden my understanding of what hunger looks like in America and help motivate me to do even more.

Will you join me?  I know that together you and I really CAN make a difference!

I’m honored to be asked to be a part of this sponsored partnership with ConAgra Foods since it is so near to my heart.  Over the next couple months, I’ll be sharing more information about the Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign and inviting you to take part!
