I am a bit of a late-bloomer when it comes to technology. Call it frugality or just good old-fashioned cheap, I simply am not a bandwagon type of girl. However, the fact that I do not own a Smartphone is borderline just-plain-stubborn. So when #CollectiveBias offered me the opportunity to try out Walmart’s Unlimited Talk/Text and Data/Web plan, I knew it was time to check out their #FamilyMobile cheap wireless plans.
I headed to my local Walmart last week and immediately a kind employee helped me locate the Nokia Lumia 521 phone and a Starter Kit.
I asked if he’d be able to help me get my phone set up and transfer my Tracphone number. He answered with a “Sure thing!” and within 15 minutes, I was signed up for the Walmart Family Mobile plan and headed out the door as a proud Smartphone owner.
What’s nice about the Walmart Family Mobile plan is that it is completely unlimited. Pay just $39.88 a month for the first line and you’ll save $5 on additional lines for family members (up to 5). I really don’t like the idea of worrying about going over my minutes and I’m impressed that this plan is just $15 more than my current Talk and Text plan which does not even include web.
I love how easy this plan makes it to share parts of my day and fun with my kids with family near and far.
With Mother’s Day approaching, a couple hundred miles will separate us from visiting with my Mom. But that doesn’t mean we can’t connect and even “visit” with each other.
I downloaded the Skype app to my phone and we had a visit with Mom/Grandma yesterday to see how it all worked.
My Mom read some books (that she used to read to me) to my boys as only she can do. They loved it.
In fact, she mentioned the possibility of her entertaining them over the phone while I make dinner in the evening. “Yes” was my immediate response.
In fact, it may have sounded a bit more like: “YESSS!!”
In addition to the lovely reading, a little quality funny-face-making took place, of course.
Way better than any old texting emoticon any day, don’t you think? This stubborn girl may have just been won over.

This sounds like the perfect plan (and price point) for your first smartphone! I love how easy it is to connect with loved ones with Walmart Family Mobile. #client

Kaley,
Thank you so much for posting this! I don’t have a smartphone either – I used a virgin mobile for three years and it finally died five months ago. I haven’t had a phone since – quite frankly I haven’t missed it. But it would be great to have one for emergencies – especially since I have kids! I am definitely looking into this!

My pleasure, Tracy! It’s a really reasonable option if you are considering a smartphone. Much lower than most contracts. Walmart carries a nice variety of phones as well that will work with the Family Plan. You can find other options through the link in the post.
