True Confessions

Dear Readers,

I have a confession to make.

Two weeks ago, I went to the mall and bought a pair of Capri pants at the Gap.  These pants were not on clearance.  In fact, they weren’t even on sale.  And no, I didn’t have a coupon.

This goes against every fiber of my being.  I waited a week before wearing them thinking, “I can always take them back.”

I decided to keep them.

Here are my reasons:

  • I HATE shopping.  In fact, the word hate may not be strong enough.  I LOATHE shopping.  I told Wes that I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as I drive up to the mall or a department store.  If I had my choice, I wouldn’t touch shopping with a 39 1/2 foot pole.
  • Because of my shopping-phobia, the last time I bought new summer clothes was probably two years ago.  Maybe three.
  • I really like the pants.  A lot.

So I kept them.

Let me be clear.  I am not in favor of making excuses for impulsive shopping.  It’s that kind of mindset that helped get me into debt many years ago.

The reality is that this is not the way I usually roll anymore.

I know I could have probably gotten four or five (or six or seven) pairs of capris at the thrift store for the amount that I paid {gulp}, and if I let myself ponder that for too long, I may feel some regret.

I guess I just want to let you all know that I am definitely human.  I hope you are okay with that.

Sincerely,

Kaley

p.s. Did I mention I really like the pants?

If you are anything like me, you’ll wear them until they fall apart! So totally justified purchase IMO. We all deserve a splurge or two every now and then, right? 🙂

So true, Marcy! (And yes…I will wear them until 2020, if I can. =)

You deserve it ! You have made that much money in coupon savings alone I am sure!! As a wife and mother I know I sometimes feel guilty for buying myself new things. That just gies to show what a truly awesome wife and mother you are !! Enjoy the pants !!!!!

You’re silly! You shouldn’t put one more second of thought about those pants in your head. You obviously don’t do this often and have completely changed your mindset and have done a fabulous job of helping to change the mindset of others – like me! Enjoy them – wear them with abandon and save the guilt for when your mom or mother-in-law visits!! (I know mine somehow always make ME feel guilty at some point). Take care and live your life without regrets!

    Kaley,
You deserve the pants. Enjoy your purchase!!

You absolutely should not feel badly about buying those pants! Because you coupon, you can “afford” (and NEED) to have occasional splurges without guilt! I had my own splurge this week… I know CVS gets you into their store by offering the “freebies” and usually I just walk in and out with ONLY what I came for. But they finally made money off me this week. I walked in and saw a brand new Godiva Dark Chocolate bar with Almonds. Was it on sale? NO. Was it on my list? NO. Did I have a coupon? NO. Did it matter at the moment? NO! I spent $3.99 on that amazing, wonderful splurge. Of course, I used my $4 of $20 coupon, so I reasoned that it was my “free” $4. 😀 It’s so great to be able to afford to splurge now, and not feel like my whole month is a splurge and my grocery budget is in ruins!

Thanks, Bev! Sounds like you enjoyed your splurge…and I’m enjoying mine. =)

I enjoy shopping but I homeschool 4 children so I don’t have time to go shopping. I find myself in many instances agonizing over $10 purchases when it’s better off if I would just enjoy the purchase and not waste my physical and mental energy. When it comes to clothes, it’s great to have something that you look in and feel great about! ENJOY!!!

Thank you for sharing when you didn’t have to, I really appreciate all that you do.

Yeah–that whole having time thing is a biggie. I didn’t mention that I had both of my boys with me. I think that may added to my dilemma!

      Thanks, May!

We all do those types of things from time to time. I do appreciate your honesty. Like anything else it’s all about moderation. Now that you have the pants – enjoy them. It would be awful to think about how much they cost every time you put them on. When you put them on just smile and enjoy your new pants. ….capture any thoughts that begin to take away your joy.

I like that, Connie–it’s about moderation. So true!

I don’t usually post but you seemed as if you needed some rationalization on this matter. Ok…capri pants that I don’t think you mentioned a price for. Let’s say $25.00. You will prob have them for 3 years, since that seems to be your cycle before you venture into the mall again, so divide $25.00 by 3 years or 1095 days and that = 2 cents a day the pants cost you. HA HA. Hey it’s ok, you didn’t comit a crime. You purchased a pair of pants. Not even a whole pair of pants. They were capris. As far as I am concerned you deserve it. All the work you do on this site….no wonder you never venture into the mall….when do you have time. It’s okay to fall off the band wagon once in a while. (It is what I call a guilty pleasure) Not every day, not every week, but once and a while I just gotta have a blizzard with no coupon….knowing full well I could purchase a whole carton of ice cream for that price. So put on those pants girl, get a smile on your face and start cutting coupons. PS…you do a fantastic job on this site.

I work at a Boscov’s store in the misses sportwear dept. and I could find bargains for anybody there. We’ve got great prices for so many differen designer clothes. This weekend we had capis for $9.99 a pair. They were LA Moda and were really cute. A lot of different designs too.

    Hey Kaley,

You shouldn’t feel bad at all. We do all this coupon, sale shopping so we can occasionally get that not on sale item.

It can be stressful to alway be looking for a deal.

It is okay you are doing great!!!!

    • kaleyehret says

      April 19th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Thanks, Milissa! Secretly, I was hoping someone would say that. =)

I think sometimes ‘falling off the wagon’ helps remind me why I’m on it in the first place!

Welcome
