Cha-Ching challenge

Welcome to the weekly Cha-Ching Challenge!

Did you find a HOT deal this week that you just want to share?  You’ve come to the right place!  Every week I post the Cha-Ching Challenge, sharing my savings for the week.    Add a link to your post detailing your savings for the week OR your favorite deal of the week. I’ll choose one participating blog to highlight next week right here on Cha-Ching on a Shoestring.

I’ve changed things up to make it even easier for you to post your favorite deals.  You can now add them to Mr. Linky at any time.  In order to be considered for the Cha-Ching Challenge Highlight, just be sure to add your link no later than Tuesday at midnight EST.

Check out my savings for the week below:

This week, other than shopping for our camping trip, I didn’t make it to the store.  But hey–that’s not a bad thing now, is it?

Savings from coupons and store sales: $55.00

  • I’ve mentioned before that we love coffee around here–and one of our favorites is Dunkin Donuts coffee.  We haven’t purchase any in a while since we can get other coffees for much less.  However, we had a coupon for 4 bags for $20 (SS 6/14, I think)–which is a savings of $3 per bag.  So we bought 8!
  • Used a $1/1 coupon from coffee-mate.com (we needed it for all that coffee we bought!)
  • Shopped at Aldi for camping trip–saved $10.
  • Used a B1G1 entree free coupon for our anniversary date to T.G.I. Friday’s.  Saved $20.

Savings from ‘Free Money’: $9.00

  • Wes and I made around $2.00 this week from YouData.
  • Redeemed some of my Swag Bucks for a $5 Amazon gift card.
  • I hadn’t checked my Upromise account in a while and was pleased to find about $2 I didn’t realize I had added to the account.

TOTAL SAVINGS:$64.00

TOTAL SAVINGS THIS YEAR: $2121.99

Guest Post: Breaking News

By Sharon from Good, True, and Beautiful

I’m not sure if you’ve heard it on the news, but there is a strange new malady sweeping across the nation…

The B1G1 Virus (or as the media has begun to refer to it, CiViSitis) has now reached epidemic proportions and the Department of Financial Security plans a press conference at noon today to address people’s growing concerns.

There is documented evidence of unusual behavior in all 50 states, with thousands of people reporting episodes of increased heart rate, sleeplessness and hyperactivity.  The outbreak seems to be highly contagious, and is infecting people regardless of age, race, or demographics.  A significant incidence of infection has been noted within the “stay at home mom” community, however, no causal relationship has been determined.

Fortunately, the Center for Disease Control is working around the clock to identify the source of the problem, but until a precise diagnosis can be made, please be on the lookout for the five most common symptoms:

  • You and your spouse no longer fight over the toothpaste since you have 12 tubes to choose from.
  • Your palms start to sweat when you see someone in the drugstore with a notebook and calculator.
  • Your son is constructing his play forts with surplus boxes of Kotex, Crest Pro-Health, Sally Hansen nail polish, and Bayer Diabetes Monitors.
  • You dream about rolling your ECB’s, multiple scenarios and finding deals on clearance.
  • Your heart starts pounding when you see the sentence “Buy $10, earn $5 ECB;  psa $2.99, use $2.00 3/19 RP, and B1G1 IE or Firefox (ymmv), free after ECB, MM after MIR!”

If you are recognize these symptoms in yourself, please do not panic.  It is important that individuals infected with CiViSitis (B1G1 Virus) realize that the euphoria of saving tons of money will resolve over time.  And while life might never return to normal, you can be confident that you will never have to pay for toothpaste again.

Guest Post: Boredom Busters

By Pam from Frugal Catholic Mommy

With 4 kids at home, I want to be prepared with spontaneous “boredom busters” to fill the days, so I’ve compiled a list to keep my kids (and yours!) busy.

  • Shiny Pennies. Click here to learn how. Even older kids still like to do this!
  • Have the kids act out a story while you video tape it, then hook up your video camera and watch it on TV. Our kids acted out Goldilocks and it was hilarious! And it kept them busy with rehearsal for about an hour, then they watched themselves on TV about 5 times!
  • Make a trash dollhouse (or “Army bunker” for boys)–this can fill up days and days! All you need is a shoebox or other cardboard box and an assortment of caps, little empty bottles, paper clips and other miscellaneous household junk that we all have lying around in a drawer. Click here for the instructions.
  • Going to the Pool? Here are 8 water games for the pool
  • Finger Weaving Contest. This is great for older kids (8+). Stock up on yarn at the dollar store and Click here for instructions.
  • Add It Up (toss $1.00 in coins out in the yard and have the kids search for the entire $1.00—while Mom takes a coffee break! If you want to be mean and take a LONG coffee break, only toss out $.95 and they will look for the elusive nickel for hours J)
  • Play Battleship. If you don’t have the actual game, you can print out a version here.
  • Make Hot Pretzels. Get creative and roll the dough into names, animals, footballs, a butterfly etc… Click here for an easy recipe.
  • Make a chalk mural on your sidewalk–let each kid (and neighbor kids) each fill up an entire sidewalk square.
  • Make your own pinata. This takes several days from start to finish, so it would be great to start on a Monday and have it ready for a play date on Friday. All ages can help with this one. Instructions here.

For more ideas, read another Boredom Busters post from Pam here.
