Ask the Readers: Birthday Cake Ideas

A while back, I asked you for Frugal Birthday Party ideas.  I loved your response!  You all had some great ideas.

I have decided to keep things extra simple this year since both boys’ birthdays are in August and it appears that we will be in the midst of a move to our new home.  (*We hope!*)  I know, I know.  I’ve vowed every other year to keep things simple–but this time I mean it!  I’m sticking with a cake and ice cream only event.  (I’m not promising that there won’t be any decorations though!)

I need your help again, dear readers. Ever since the birthday cake fiasco last year, I no longer trust my cake-making skills.

Do you have any recommendations for a simple, easy-to-make, but super cute birthday cake?  (That’s not asking too much, is it?)  And if you happened to have a link to a how-to recipe online, I’d be even more grateful!

By the way, the picture above is a Popcorn Cupcake that my friend Anna made for her daughter’s birthday.  How adorable is that?

I’ve always enjoyed the “dirt cake”. Crushed up oreos, pudding and worms. I think one time, my mom even put it in a planter type pot.

Here is a version of it:

What about letting the kids decorate their own cupcakes? Give them a plate with a cupcake, a dollop of frosting and a knife. They spread the frosting and then can add sprinkles, M&Ms, gummy worms, etc. Most of them will probably just eat the frosting and candies and skip the cupcake all together!

For my daughter’s 10th birthday we had Brownie Sundaes. The girls got a brownie, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and then they got to put toppings. For the M&Ms I had leftover individual packages from valentine’s day, so the chocolate was “portion controlled”.

Do you have a theme? I’ve always found it more simple to do cupcakes. I usually go to flickr.com and do a search for whatever theme I’m looking for. I also go to familyfun.com and etsy for party ideas. I also use to find some ideas on the m & m website…..but mostly for seasonal things.

Hope y’all are doing well! Your boys are adorable.:)
