Simplify.

“Nothing is too good for the heavily mortgaged.”

My buddy Jeff dropped this quote on me as we drove into a pricey mall in Orlando, Florida a while ago, and it has really stuck in my mind. This little eight word quote has helped me remain content with what I have as we struggle to make ends meet.

“Wes,” he said. “When we go into this mall we are going to see two kinds of people.  There will be normal looking ones like us. And then, there will be the ones wearing all the fancy “bling” and the designer clothes. The ones that look like us are the ones with the money. The ones with all the “bling” are the ones with all the credit card debt, pricey car payments, monster mortgages, and the stressed out lives.”

It can be difficult watching people walk by with nice new clothes, or seeing someone drive by with that new 2009 Honda Odyssey mini-van as we cram our two boys, a diaper bag, bike, stroller, and booster seats into our 1995 Camry with the 130,000 miles on it. I get a little “I-don’t-like-mini-vans-but-I-could-put-up-with-that” envy going on.

Maybe for you, it’s not “Honda-Odyssey-Envy”, but it’s  “Tropical-Vacation-Envy” or “Gucci-Purse-Envy” or maybe it’s just “Purdue-Chicken-Envy”.  You know what I mean.

It is easy to look on and think, “That would make life easier; I wish we had one of those.”

It is usually about that time that God or something I ate prompts Jeff’s quote to echo inside my head. The translation goes something like this. “Sure Wes, you and Kaley have great credit and would probably have no problem getting a nice fat loan so you could drive a new car. But, how would you like to give up your emergency savings and then some to have that $400 car payment hanging over your head every month…for the next 48 months of your life?”

It’s about that time that I thankfully look down at that beautifully worn grey steering wheel and think, “I sure am glad we own this car, it has been so good to us.” We haven’t had to pay anything more than regular maintenance on it for over five years now.  Our savings + $400/month x 12 x 4….$19,200 + interest to drive up to the same McDonald’s drive-through for the same greasy food everyone else gets.

If you are buried in payments and are having a hard time enjoying the simple things, I want to encourage you to simplify your life a bit.

It will be a little painful going without some of the conveniences others may have.  But know this: not EVERYONE ELSE has that particular thing you think you can’t live without.  Sell some of the things that “own you” on ebay or Craigslist and get out from underneath that financial weight.

Contentment is waiting right around the corner for you. She’s chillin’ in a rocking chair with a cool beverage in one hand and a wad of just enough cash to live on in the other.

Have no fear.  I have not dropped off the face of the earth.  In fact, I’m greatly enjoying the face of the earth right now.  I’m currently in Central Park in NYC with my two sisters and my Mom.  Our intentions were to get here early enough to get tickets to Shakespeare in the Park.  Alas, we missed  our chance–even though I left my house at 3:30 a.m. Possibly the fact that Anne Hathaway plays a role and the tickets are free may have inspired the thousands of others who arrived before us.

The good news is that we happened upon a Brad Paisley concert in Central Park–gotta love NYC!  (Oh…and yes, I am a closet country music lover.  Please don’t hate.)

And, if seeing Brad Paisley wasn’t exciting enough,  did I mention I got to meet two of my bloggy buddies yesterday?  Sharon from The Good, True, and Beautiful, and Jenn from Frugal Upstate and I met up at McDonald’s (and yes…that was plan B since it was raining outside…three frugal bloggers at McDonald’s is not a common sight.)  We had a great time chatting and learning from each other–Brad’s got nothing on you girls!  Thanks for proving to be as cool as I thought you were!

*UPDATE:  I’m home now. I have two words for you: “I’m pooped!”  It’s been a great couple of days, but I’m heading to bed and will re-join the blogging world tomorrow after I’ve recovered.  Good night!

Updating the List: Gardening

Remember The List? Well, we’ve been working on crossing off another item and I wanted to share some pics!

We currently rent an apartment, so our gardening takes place in pots. We’ve gardened in pots in past years, but this is our first year starting our plants from seed. This year, we are growing tomatoes, lettuce, basil, and broccoli. It’s so fun to watch them grow. (And it’s about the only reason I feel grateful for the constant rain this summer. Sigh. Although I’m not so grateful for it pouring out of my gutters and into my plant pots as it causes soil erosion and over waters them, that’s killed off a few of my plants so far! I have contacted Clean Pro Gutter Cleaning Huntsville area though and they’ve managed to sort my gutter issues out finally!) … So after this little dilemma was sorted it’s been amazing watching our seeds grow into these plants. The only thing that I have tried to keep my eye on during this process are pests, as I don’t want them to start infesting my home after being attracted by my plants. My friend who lives in Pennsylvania has told me about these experts that she uses, (https://www.pestcontrolexperts.com/local/pennsylvania/) and apparently they’ve done a great job in being able to free her home of any unwanted guests. I guess I’ll just have to make sure that I keep my eye out for any bugs near my windows so I can spray them with some repellent. I hope this doesn’t happen though, as I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved so far.

I will admit that my thumb is only a very light green and possibly more of a yellowish tint. My landscaping knowledge also leaves a lot to be desired. For example, when I had a garden of my own a few years ago I used to hire a team of lawn care professionals to take care of my grass. Keeping your lawn looking lovely and free from weeds and pests takes a lot of work so there is no shame in reaching out to the experts on websites like www.lawncare.net after all. My grass was always so healthy and neat. Before I attempted any gardening, I was under the assumption that it was all work and no play, and that I would be up to my armpits in weeding day in and day out. But what amazes me is that these plants just continue to grow in spite of me. I really can’t take much of the credit. I wonder what would happen if I had a massive garden to look after, and not just a couple of plant pots? Like what would happen if I had a lawn to mow, trees to prune – how would I cope when it came to Autumn and I would have to make sure to sweep up all the leaves off the ground? I’d probably have to make use of something from The Best Leaf Blowers, but I just feel like that would be too much for me. I much prefer having a smaller garden, even if it only has plant pots in it at the moment. It’s certainly a lot easier for me to look after anyway. Although I commend those people who have huge gardens that still look incredible – how do you do it?

How about you? Are you a gardener? Leave a link if you have pictures! I want to see! (I will try not to be too embarrassed…)

Oh…and while you are checking out The List, add a few more ideas. We are always looking for new ways to save money!

Gone Camping

June 24th, 2009 By Kaley

We are all packed up and on our way to Creation Northeast.  (Picture Woodstock–only with Christian bands.)

We scored some free tickets because our friends our playing and we are going to help watch their son–who is also best buddies with Griffin.  (Check out their band, The Proxy–they’re awesome!)

So, we will be without all the amenities of life for a few days–including internet connection.  But, have no fear–I have all sorts of fun stuff scheduled out.  You’ll hardly even notice I am gone.

Now that I am all done re-writing my packing list, I remembered a great site that I found on From the Trenches of Motherhood.  It’s called DontForgetYourToothbrush.com and it’s a fantastic resource for all you fans of list-making.  You can create your very own customized lists in advance and they will be e-mailed to you in the time frame that you designate.

The only tricky part is that the site is British–so some of the wording is a bit confusing.  (For example, can anyone tell me what a ‘budgie’ is?!)  But other than that, I have a feeling many of you will love this site.  Do you have any other great tips when it comes to preparing for a trip?

Oh…and by the eay, next time I go camping, will someone remind me about this post?  Thanks.
