The Big Race

I’m finally ready for my big race tonight.

“What big race?” you ask.

My ‘Race-Around-To-As-Many-Stores-As-Possible-While-Wes-Watches-The-Kids-For-a-Couple-Hours’ Race.  Let me tell you, if there were a prize, I would win it.  I am one focused girl when it comes to squeezing in as many deals as possible in the time allotted.

Since I’m organizing my list anyway, I thought I might as well share it with you.  It includes:

Aldi:
Just printed out my E-Mealz menu and shopping list and –VOILA!– my menu planning is done.  Kind of looking forward to trying ‘Salsa Sirloin Salad’ this week.  Yummy.

Staples:

I found this great deal on printer paper from Mercedes at Common Sense with Money:

HammerMill Copy Paper (500 sheets), $4.99
$3.99 Staples Easy Rebate (limit 2)
$1 after rebate! Offer good in stores until 6/13.

Target:
I plan on getting quite a few things here, including this Crystal Light deal, this Degree Men’s Deodorant deal, my free Mars candy bars, and a few other miscellaneous items I need.

CVS:
Gotta get some free Dawn Dish detergent and Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats for $.79 a box after ECBs.

That should do it for this week.  Don’t want to strain a muscle before the next big race!

Dear Friends and Family,

It’s official.

I’ve been labeled ‘Frugal’.

I wasn’t sure it was so until my brother admitted to me the other day that he was afraid to eat anything at my house while watching my children.  He thought it might throw off my whole frugal eating plan.

I’m not sure how I feel about this.  I suppose it’s a bit of a compliment in a strange sort of way.  Apparently he’s so impressed with my money-saving savviness, that he’s willing to starve to support it.

Hearing him say this has made me realize that maybe I need to clear a few things up with those I hold dear.  Here goes:

Dear Friends and Family,

I realize that in the past year, some of you may think that I have gone off the deep end with this whole saving money thing.  Don’t think I haven’t noticed your eyes glazing over as soon as the words ‘extrabucks‘  and  ‘swagbucks‘  escape my lips.  Indeed, I recognize that my enthusiasm over my latest free tube of toothpaste may be more irritating than contagious.  I’m pretty sure that some of you still haven’t forgiven me for that wild goose chase I sent you on with Oprah’s Free KFC.

I just want to say one thing.  I understand.  Frugality can be annoying.

In an effort to make it up to you, I want to clear a few things up:

  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, you may eat whatever you can find.  My ‘frugal eating plan’ is not as strict as you may think.  (And besides, I probably have a coupon for whatever you ate anyway.)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, feel free to make any long distance phone calls that you need to.  (We’ve got onesuite, so it’s only $.03 a minute!)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, help yourself to toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, mouthwash, dish soap, and pretty much anything you can find in my closet. (PLEASE…we need space to get more free stuff!)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, it probably means Wes and I are out spending a little moolah on ourselves.  Yep.  We do that occasionally.  In fact, we kind of like it.  Gasp, huh?
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, THANK YOU!  (I may pay you in coupons and Johnson’s Buddies Soaps, but THANK YOU!)

With much love,

Kaley

How We Got Here, Part 4

May 19th, 2009 By Kaley

Read part 1, part 2, and part 3 of this series.

So, when Wes and I married, I had debt.  He didn’t.

I remember the conversation we had when I revealed to him the debt I was going to bring into our marriage.  He responded with such graciousness.  We committed to eradicating this debt within the first year of our marriage.

This was good.  Becoming completely debt-free is one of the best decisions we have ever made.

I am a pretty low-maintenance kind of girl, so I quickly adapted to the way Wes handled money due to his frugal up-bringing.  I did have a few ground rules, however:

  • NO milking our own goats
  • NO hatching our own chickens
  • AND ABSOLUTELY NO COUPONING!!!

Oh, every once in a while, I would buy a Sunday paper and make a lame attempt at using a coupon or two.  Instead, the stack of coupons would usually just sit there laughing at me that I had spent a whole $1.50 on them.  I was convinced that when God was handing out the couponing gene, He skipped over me.

It took Wes’s lay-off a little over a year ago for me to realize that there was so much more that I could do to save money.  I was pregnant with our second son and would be giving up my part-time job as a result.  Who knew how long we would be without an income?  I had no choice but to learn more about those evil things called coupons.

I began asking my friend Beckie, whom I lovingly referred to as the Queen of Freebies, to PLEASE mentor me through this foreign world of coupon clipping, deal hunting, and freebie finding.

Little did I know that my world was about to change.

I wrote this in my other blog a few weeks later:

Hi. My name is Kaley and I’m an addict.

I never thought it would come to this.

I’ve become a coupon/free stuff junkie.

It’s bad.

It all started because of Beckie’s influence and now I’m having a hard time pulling myself away from my coupon clipping, ad-scanning, web-surfing addiction to even tell you about it.

My mind is overflowing with CVS extra bucks deals and Rite Aid single check rebates and Price Chopper’s triple coupons and the sale prices of dozens of items.

Beckie tells me that in a month or so, I should be back to my normal self. I will no longer have nightmares about missing out on a free after rebate deal. I will stop making my husband wait for 45 minutes in the car while I just “run in” to CVS….for the third time that week. And I will be able to dedicate a little bit more time to the non-essentials in life like cooking and cleaning.

Eventually life did return to normal–but  a new normal.  My inner deal-hunting diva was discovered and I realized how do-able saving money really was.

Soon I began sharing what I was learning on my blog and quickly realized that I enjoyed helping others find deals as much as finding them myself.  I mentioned to Wes one day that I might actually enjoy creating a blog, chronicling our journey of saving money.  He loved the idea.

And that, my dear readers, is How We Got Here.

(And I haven’t had to milk a goat yet!)

Happy Mother’s Day to so many of my readers!  I am currently enjoying being pampered by my husband and doing pretty much nothing.  Ahhhh…

But, my sister in law sent me this Mother of the Year video and I just had to share.   Enjoy and feel free to pass it on!  It’s hilarious!
