Couponing for Community Guest Post: How YOU Can Organize a Simple Local Donation Drive

April 23rd, 2012 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

It’s less than two weeks until Couponing for Community 2012 begins!  This week I’ve asked some fellow C4C participants to share how they have used coupons to GIVE and offer us tips on making our giving even BIGGER. I hope you’ll enjoy this post by Aimee about organizing a simple local donation drive and maybe even consider doing the same!
***

When I first heard about the Couponing for Community drive around this time last year, I knew it was something that I was eager to participate in. As a stay-at-home-mother of three children, I often find myself wishing I could do more to help others. But, when you have five people living on one income, finances are tight! One of the things I like best about Couponing for Community is that it makes it easier for all of us to give big while actually spending very little (or give VERY BIG while spending a little more)!

How I Organized a Local Donation Drive in a few easy steps:

Last year, I teamed up with a friend and the two of us placed a few phone calls. We received the go ahead from two local libraries and our local YMCA to place empty boxes in their lobbies for the week. Then we emailed all of our friends and asked the libraries and the Y to help us spread the word via their email lists, as well.

At the end of the week, we had collected 365 items; enough for a local needy family to receive a new item every day for one whole year! We were beside ourselves. Driving over to pick up the items and drop them off at our local food pantry only took one morning to complete. Realizing the great impact it had on our community, we would gladly have done even more!

Now, I don’t run a couponing blog with thousands of followers (I do happen to run a website, but it is focused on family events in the town where I live). But, I didn’t let that stop me from organizing my own local drive…and it doesn’t have to stop anyone else either! If you are a fan of the Couponing for Community program and have a desire to rally up those around you to make a greater impact for those in need, you have all you need to run a successful drive of your own: passion.

How YOU Can Do the Same:

Passion is contagious. If you are excited about the C4C program, let it show.

-Tell your friends and neighbors.

-Share the Couponing for Community Facebook page on your Facebook wall.

-Send out an email to your friends, family, and others in groups you may belong to and let people know they can bring items to your home.

Or, go one step further and contact your local library, YMCA or other local community center and ask if you can set up an empty box in their lobby for the week. You can also contact local business owners or your local Chamber of Commerce or other business association to see if any other businesses would be interested in participating. (Maybe you can recall the businesses that had Toys for Tots boxes in their lobbies a few months back. Start there!)

Having a box in the lobby of a business is not a great imposition in most cases. Yet, the increased foot traffic and visibility that a business will receive can be very helpful to them! In this economy, small businesses love opportunities for publicity that are easy on their budgets.

Spread the Word!

I hope this has helped inspire you to start your own C4C drive. I can tell you from personal experience that the rewards far outweigh the effort and, if you have children, this is a very family-friendly, hands-on project that can help you to teach them by example. So, go on! I challenge you to send an email right now to your friends, neighbors and family and invite them to join us as we help even more families this year than last!

Note from Kaley: Then be sure to join in the FUN by adding your donation totals during the week of May 6-12 on the C4C Facebook page.  Let’s blow our 30,000 item goal out of the water!

Aimee is a mom of three small children who was tired of sifting through magazines and skimming websites to find local events and decided to start North Penn Under Ten so that her region with its population of over 90,000 could have a site of its own.

Couponing for Community 2012 – It’s Going to be BIG. (Who’s In?!)

April 10th, 2012 By Kaley

Couponing for Community is back!!

What started out as a crazy idea of mine a couple of years ago has now turned into one of my favorite events of the year.  And this year is going to be even BIGGER than ever.

So what is Couponing for Community anyway?

Couponing for Community is an effort by couponers all over America to use the power of couponing to make a united impact.  We invite you to join this community of couponers by using your couponing skills to give to a homeless shelter, food pantry, or a friend in need during the week of May 6-12, 2012!  May 12 is also National Stamp Out Hunger day, so giving is as easy as leaving a bag of non-perishable items by your mailbox.

What is this year’s goal?

  • In 2010, I was thrilled when well over 3,000 items were donated by couponers nation-wide in one week’s time.
  • In 2011, I was blown away when 127 bloggers promoted the cause and 26,639 items were donated during our Couponing for Community event.

So this year we are setting our goal even BIGGER then ever:

  • In 2012, our goal is to join together to give 30,000 items in one week’s time. Yep.  We’re going BIG.

We simply invite you to track your giving during the week  of May 6-12 and then share your story and pictures on our Facebook page. We’ll even have a giving tracker to tally up everyone’s efforts!!

What can you do now?

  • First, head on over and Like Couponing for Community on Facebook!   That will help keep you up to date on the details of the upcoming event and give you a place to connect with all of the other participating!
  • Second, as you shop over the next few weeks, begin to set aside items that you can donate during the week of May 6-12.  Note: Since we want to keep a tally of items given that week, make sure to keep track of the number of items that you give away.  You can even take a picture to upload on the Facebook page.
  • If you have a blog and would like to participate, simply write up a post about Couponing for Community and then submit the direct link to your post on the ‘Join Us’ tab.
  • Maybe you’d even like to hold a local donation drive?  Feel free to contact me if you’d like some tips on how to get started.

And, of course, stay tuned for all the latest details right here on Cha-Ching on a Shoestring!

I promise you.  You are NOT going to want to miss this event.  It’s a chance to flex our couponing muscles for GOOD like never before!

So…who’s in?!

Couponing for Community 2011: A Picture Slideshow of What YOU Did This Week

I get some crazy ideas.

So last year when I asked a few of my fellow bloggers to join me in using our couponing skills to make a united effort to give, I wondered if they might think my idea was…well…crazy.

But they didn’t.  In fact, they actually wanted to do it again!

So this year, we decided to ask our readers to give again.  But this time…I wondered if we could  reach for a goal of 10,000 items in one week’s time?

I was pretty sure that this time they might officially call me loopy.

But no.  I was wrong.  Again.

Instead, 127 bloggers and hundreds upon hundreds of couponers dug deep, gathered the fruits of their savvy money-stretching fingers, set out donation bins in their neighborhoods, contacted their news stations, gathered their coupon clubs, held donation drives, and GAVE.

And when I thought you couldn’t give anymore, you just kept right on GIVING.

-And our 10,000 item goal?  You blew right by that number like it was a mere handful.

-So we set a new goal.  15,000 came and went like it was a Dr. Oz freebie (I’m guessing most of you understand what I mean.)

-So we thought, could we actually reach 20,000? Double our goal?!

The numbers keep coming, but as I write this post, the numbers have been tallied and during the week of May 8-14:

26,639 items

were given to those who are struggling.

26,639 NEEDS were met.

And now, my tears are flowing.  I’m humbled, blessed, and speechless at the way people (complete strangers!) across the country joined forces to give to those in need.  I am convinced that couponers are some of the most generous people I will ever meet.

This slideshow made up of pictures shared on our Couponing for Community Facebook page demonstrates this truth far better than my words ever could.  (And this isn’t even the half of what was given!)

After you watch it, would you please just leave a comment or a link to your blog if you were a part of this effort?   I want to honor YOU.

Here is one last reminder about the drive tomorrow:

Shannon from For the Mommas and I invite you to stop by Dunkin Donuts in Limerick on Saturday (5/14) any time between 1-3 pm at to drop off any non-perishable food or healthy and beauty items.  (Click here for directions.)  The drive will be benefiting Keystone Opportunity Center.

Plus Dunkin Donuts will be giving FREE iced coffee samples to everyone who stops by to donate between 1-3 pm.  (As a girl who is in love with DD coffee, this makes me a little giddy, I confess.)

Oh, did I mention the raffles?  Two words for you: Target and Amazon. Enough said.

Not local?  No worries! Giving is as simple as leaving a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox as part of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday.

Couponing for Community: Simply Giving

We are now halfway through our Couponing for Community week and I wanted to share a simple, but meaningful way that I found to give this week.

For those of you who have been around for a while, you may remember my friend ‘Rose’ that I shared a Thanksgiving meal with several months ago.   ‘Rose’ now has a special place in my heart since I met her and learned a bit of her story.

So I decided to make up a little bag of goodies and take them to Rose as a Mother’s Day gift:

It was a simple little bag, but it sure was fun to see it bring a smile to her face.

If you are still looking for ways to give as a part of Couponing for Community this week, remember that it’s not about giving BIG.  Sometimes it’s the simple things that count.

Don’t forget that Saturday is also National Stamp Out Hunger day, so giving is as easy as leaving a bag of non-perishable items by your mailbox.  And if you are local, be sure to come out to Dunkin Donuts on Saturday, May 14 from 1-3 pm.   Shannon and I want to meet you (and score you some FREE coffee)!

Be sure to share your story on our Couponing for Community Facebook page.  We want to celebrate Saving and Giving together!
