How We Prepared for a Layoff Part 2: A is for Apartment

You can read the first post in this series here.

I shared in my first post in this series, “How We Prepared for a Lay-off” that we survived a year and a half of uncertain income without going into debt. It was the choices that we made prior to the layoff that truly made the difference for us. Without realizing it, we were preparing for our lay-off since the first year of our marriage.

While there are thousands of ways to be frugal, we wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for these five BASIC decisions that we made before the layoff:

The next topic in this series on BASIC lay-off survival prep is Apartment:

B – Budget
A – Apartment
S –
I –
C –

We lived in the same very reasonably priced apartment for the first 7 years of our marriage. We were very blessed to have landlords who treated us like family and our kids like they were their own grandkids. It was a great situation.

That’s not to say that there weren’t many occasions that we considered buying a home.

I tend to be more of a free spirit than Wes when it comes to finances. We would look at our budget and I would say, “Look – we have just enough money to buy that house!”

And Wes would say, “But what if the roof needs to be repaired or the heater needs to be replaced? We have no wiggle room.”

And as much as I hated to admit it, I knew he was right.

And when Wes was laid off, there was no greater evidence that he was right.

I shudder to think what would have happened if we had made the choice to buy a home before we knew we were ready.

Here are a few ways that we knew that we needed to continue to rent:

  • Our future was uncertain. Throughout the first 7 years of marriage, we were on a journey of discovering what Wes was called to do in life. It’s another story in itself, but throughout that time, we were unsure what our income would look like in the future or where we would end up living. Buying a home would have tied us down in ways that we weren’t ready to accept.
  • Renting allowed us to save money for our future home. We were blessed to have a low rent that allowed us to set aside a good percentage of our income for the future. If this were not so, then buying may have seemed like a reasonable thing to do. Reading real estate investing books is helping us to decide where to put our money when it comes to properties.
  • We had enough room in our apartment. Granted, things got a little tight when our second son was born. (We are hoping that he will forgive us for making him sleep in the bathroom when he was first born!) But it wasn’t unbearable. Not to mention, there is a lot to be said for the simplicity of not being responsible for your own home repairs and maintenance!

If you follow me on Facebook, you may know that we are currently officially looking for our first home. It’s a very exciting time for us. We love the idea of settling down where we are and learning the ropes of homeownership. I look forward to decorating and painting my home exactly how I want it to be. Wes looks forward to learning more about the home repair (for now, anyway!). He’s done a lot of research in that area just in case something happens and it needs to be fixed right away! Like if we have a slab leak, it may seem isolated but it can travel through the house and damage the foundation, knowing who to contact in that area of expertise is very important. We can’t wait to make our home our own.

There is also a lot of peace knowing that we have saved and planned and prepared for this day. Sometimes, renting an apartment when you don’t need lots of space for a family can be the best thing to do. One of my friends recently started renting an apartment from thespacestation.co.uk, she seems to really like her apartment. More and more people seem to be renting recently, perhaps that’s because of the increase in housing prices. I am so grateful that we didn’t jump the gun and decide to purchase a home before we were ready. It’s made a world of difference for us.

And yes, Wes–you were right. (I may need to be reminded of that from time to time. Here is your permission.)

Note: Dave Ramsey has a calculator to compare the costs of buying vs. renting. This could be a great tool to help with any upcoming decisions about this.

How about you? Have you had to make a decision between buying and renting? What has helped you to decide?

The following is a post I wrote a little over a year ago. I thought a little walk down memory lane would be fun…

It’s official.

I’ve been labeled ‘Frugal’.

I wasn’t sure it was so until my brother admitted to me the other day that he was afraid to eat anything at my house while watching my children.  He thought it might throw off my whole frugal eating plan.

I’m not sure how I feel about this.  I suppose it’s a bit of a compliment in a strange sort of way.  Apparently he’s so impressed with my money-saving savviness, that he’s willing to starve to support it.

Hearing him say this has made me realize that maybe I need to clear a few things up with those I hold dear.  Here goes:

Dear Friends and Family,

I realize that in the past year, some of you may think that I have gone off the deep end with this whole saving money thing.  Don’t think I haven’t noticed your eyes glazing over as soon as the words ‘extrabucks‘  and  ‘swagbucks‘  escape my lips.  Indeed, I recognize that my enthusiasm over my latest free tube of toothpaste may be more irritating than contagious.  I’m pretty sure that some of you still haven’t forgiven me for that wild goose chase I sent you on with Oprah’s Free KFC.

I just want to say one thing.  I understand.  Frugality can be annoying.

In an effort to make it up to you, I want to clear a few things up:

  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, you may eat whatever you can find.  My ‘frugal eating plan’ is not as strict as you may think.  (And besides, I probably have a coupon for whatever you ate anyway.)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, feel free to make any long distance phone calls that you need to.  (We’ve got onesuite, so it’s only $.03 a minute!)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, help yourself to toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, mouthwash, dish soap, and pretty much anything you can find in my closet. (PLEASE…we need space to get more free stuff!)
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, it probably means Wes and I are out spending a little moolah on ourselves.  Yep.  We do that occasionally.  In fact, we kind of like it.  Gasp, huh?
  • If you are ever at my house babysitting my children, THANK YOU!  (I may pay you in coupons and Johnson’s Buddies Soaps, but THANK YOU!)

With much love,

Kaley

Remember my true confessions post a few weeks ago when I admitted that even I occasionally fall off the wagon and pay full price for things?  Remember how I bought those capris at Gap for a price that I’m embarrassed to say out loud because I could have bought four or five (or six or seven) pairs at a thrift store for the same amount?

Remember how I really liked the pants?

Guess what my husband got me for Mother’s Day?

Yep.  The same pair of capris.  In a different color.

Somehow he purchased them right under my nose when we were at the Gap the other night. (Yes–I went to the mall twice in one month!  What is this world coming to?!)

We checked and they were still not on sale.  He told me I should buy another pair since I wear these every other day.  I refused.

{Instead, I bought a shirt for $1.97 and a sweater for $2.97.  This is where you applaud wildly.}

That sneaky guy bought me another pair.

I love him.

True Confessions

April 19th, 2010 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

Dear Readers,

I have a confession to make.

Two weeks ago, I went to the mall and bought a pair of Capri pants at the Gap.  These pants were not on clearance.  In fact, they weren’t even on sale.  And no, I didn’t have a coupon.

This goes against every fiber of my being.  I waited a week before wearing them thinking, “I can always take them back.”

I decided to keep them.

Here are my reasons:

  • I HATE shopping.  In fact, the word hate may not be strong enough.  I LOATHE shopping.  I told Wes that I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as I drive up to the mall or a department store.  If I had my choice, I wouldn’t touch shopping with a 39 1/2 foot pole.
  • Because of my shopping-phobia, the last time I bought new summer clothes was probably two years ago.  Maybe three.
  • I really like the pants.  A lot.

So I kept them.

Let me be clear.  I am not in favor of making excuses for impulsive shopping.  It’s that kind of mindset that helped get me into debt many years ago.

The reality is that this is not the way I usually roll anymore.

I know I could have probably gotten four or five (or six or seven) pairs of capris at the thrift store for the amount that I paid {gulp}, and if I let myself ponder that for too long, I may feel some regret.

I guess I just want to let you all know that I am definitely human.  I hope you are okay with that.

Sincerely,

Kaley

p.s. Did I mention I really like the pants?

” I wonder what sort of a tale we’ve fallen into?”
-Sam “The Fellowship of the Ring”

Two years ago today, my husband got laid off.

It came as no surprise, really.  The small college where he worked was struggling financially.

We entered into this phase with a confidence and a peace that God had plans for us.

About one month into it, the novelty began to fade.

About six months in, the ups and downs of the job hunt and the uncertainty of temporary jobs were beginning to take a toll.  (Although I still feel a sense of gratitude for the temporary jobs that Wes worked.  They provided a paycheck in uncertain times.)

About one year in, I was really struggling.  Bitterness was beginning to set in.  It had been an awful year full of pain and heartache beyond the job hunt.  I have record of my hurt and anger in journals during that time. In fact, I just found this entry that I wrote a year ago:

“I believe it was a year ago TODAY that Wes was laid off.  Two days ago, we found out that North Carolina was a NO.

Sigh…what a journey.

We started the journey with great confidence.  It’s definitely starting to waver.  What do you have in store, God?  We just can’t put our finger on it.

Is it Philly?”

If you’ve been around here for long, you know the answer to that question.  The answer was YES.  It WAS Philly! (Ok, north of Philly if you want to be technical.)  It took another five months before we actually made the move, but the wheels had begun to turn.

This is why I want to celebrate the two year anniversary of my husband’s lay-off today.

Not because it was fun.  (A year and a half of uncertain income is a looong time…)

Not because it was easy. (I am just now getting ready to pay off a large, ugly bill from my husband’s hospital visit ONE WEEK before he finally was insured again.)

Not because I would like to go back and do it all over again. (But honestly, you never know in these times…)

I want to celebrate because it was the beginning of a journey. Were it not for his lay-off, we would not have been stretched and pushed to where we are today, financially, vocationally, spiritually…  And in fact, were it not for his lay-off, I would not blogging here today.

I actually wrote the quote above from Sam in The Fellowship of the Ring in my journal about six months before Wes’s lay-off. Little did I know how my tale was about to change.

I sure would like the ability to see the end of our path and know that all will end well.  I’d love to picture years of financial stability with no more battles with unemployment and paying for groceries with WIC checks. (In fact, I’d love to know that we will have the resources we need in order to help those who are paying for their groceries with WIC checks.) And sure–I’ll take the white picket fence too.

But life is a journey, isn’t it?  Who knows what a day may bring forth.

Because of the journey that began two years ago today, I have confidence that God will continue to show us how to take the next step.

And that’s why I’m celebrating today.

Why I Won’t Be Eating for 30 Hours This Weekend

February 25th, 2010 By Kaley

30 hour famine

Have you ever heard of the 30 Hour Famine?  It’s a World Vision event that is held nationwide in various churches and youth groups to raise money for impoverished countries.  Groups of teens and adults go without food for 30 hours and ask people to sponsor them in return.

Tomorrow through Saturday I will be joining a group of about 35 teens and adults in skipping meals for 30 hours. By doing so, we will be raising money for the people of Haiti.

I gotta be honest.  I’m starting to feel hungry just thinking about it.  I do. not. like. to go without food.

But it’s good.

It’s good for me to come face to face with the realities that so much of the world suffers with every single day of their life.

I’ve wavered back and forth, but I finally decided to share the link with you all that allows you to donate money on-line. (Asking you to give money is something I’ve never done before.  But I decided this is definitely a worthy cause.)

If you’d like to even donate $5, it would go directly to World Vision to help them in their continued efforts to help those who are dealing with the aftermath in Haiti.

I know that not all of you can give, and that’s ok.  But if you can, simply click here to do so. (After you are done, you will be e-mailed a receipt.)

Oh…and no comments about food tomorrow on the blog, ok?  I am going to be one hungry girl.

But it’s good.
