Saving on a Shoestring Update: Project Well Complete and Cha-Ching! Christmas Club Update

July 9th, 2013 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

As I promised last month, I plan to hold a Monthly Saving Checkup here to help keep all of us accountable and motivated to reach our savings goals.

But first…an Update on Project Well.

I shared last year that my family had a goal to save enough money to donate a well that will bring clean water to a community of up to 150 people through World Vision.

I am happy to share that last month, our dream became a reality.

After several years of setting aside money each month, it was a joy to finally be able to accomplish our mission.

We gave our two older boys the opportunity to join us by adding some of their chore money each week to our ‘Project Well Jar’.  They often surprised me by adding more than our suggested amount.  We could all learn a lot from our kids, don’t you think?

Thanks for letting us share this Giving Journey with you.  It’s easy to focus on how much more needs to be done, but today I’m celebrating!

You all thought I forgot about this month’s Saving on a Shoestring update, didn’t you?

Well now.  I totally didn’t forget.

I am simply fashionably late.  (Sounds better, doesn’t it?)

In all seriousness, here is our recent update.  I just shared with my husband where we are at with our Project Well savings and he said, “That is SO cool.”  Multiple times.

I’ll admit that I’m behind where I should be for the Cha-Ching! Christmas Club (since Christmas is only about 3 months away…yikes!).  Time to get motivated!

So here our our current totals for our Saving on a Shoestring projects:

Project Well: 88%

Cha-Ching! Christmas Club: 29%.

How about you? Have you been saving and scrimping toward a reward or are you a part of the Cha-Ching! Christmas Club?  Then leave a comment or a link below telling us about it.

AND just to add to all the fun going on around here, I will give a $5 Amazon gift code to one person who leaves a direct link to their savings post or a comment sharing an update on their savings.  (I figure it’s just one more way to help you save on that shoestring!)

The giveaway will end Monday, September 17, 2012  at  11:59 pm EST. I’ll randomly select the winning comment or link. Winner will be notified by email and listed on this site.

Learn more about our Savings Goals for this year here and here.

I really fell off the wagon with sharing our latest Saving on a Shoestring updates over the past few months.  I think we got a little distracted with our new little guy’s arrival.  He’s 3 months old now though, so I’m slowly starting to gain a little bit more normalcy around here!

We have still been putting our dollars aside for our two big goals this year, so I wanted to update you all on how much money we’ve set aside for each.

The good news is that it’s been so long since I updated that we have made a BIG jump in our savings goal toward Project Well.  At this rate, I’m hoping we will be able to donate a well by the end of the year.  So exciting!

So here our our current totals for our Saving on a Shoestring projects:

Project Well: 84%

Cha-Ching! Christmas Club: 19%.

Saving on a Shoestring Update Part 2: A New Savings Goal + Share Your Savings Goals

March 8th, 2012 By Kaley

Saving on a Shoestring button-125(2)

You can read part one of this post here.

As I mentioned in the last post, we’ve made some changes to our Savings Goals for this year.

The second update that I want to share with you is something that has been brewing in me for quite some time.

I have loved saving up for some big things like a mini van and a cruise, but I’ve also felt for a long time that I wanted to save up for something even more meaningful.

You see, using our money to give is something that my husband and I place a high priority on.  We’ve been setting aside a certain percentage of our income to use toward giving to our church and to those in need for quite some time.  It is very rewarding to be able to give back when a need arises in our community or among family and friends –especially since we were blessed many times by others who did the same for us when our need was great.

We want to continue to to do that, but lately I’ve been thinking that wouldn’t it be FUN to set a GIVING GOAL this year?

Something that likely wouldn’t happen if we weren’t intentional about saving toward our goal.

My husband and I have a special place in our heart for the work of World Vision.  We currently sponsor a child in Africa through their program and have raised money with our youth group for years as part of their 30 Hour Famine event.

I was leafing through their gift catalog the other day and spotted the opportunity to donate a well that will bring clean water to a community of up to 150 people.

I thought, “That is what I want to do.”

I mentioned the idea to my husband and he loved it.  It’s kind of humbling to think that we could help provide something so basic to us as water, but so life-giving to others?

So there you have it.  Our new savings goal: Project Well. I’m not sure how long it will take for us to reach it, but I wanted to share it with you so you can join us on our journey!

So here our our current totals for our Saving on a Shoestring projects:

Project Well: 46%
Cha-Ching! Christmas Club: 10%.

Saving on a Shoestring Update Part 1: Big Changes!

March 5th, 2012 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

Saving on a Shoestring button-125(2)

It’s been a very long time since my last Saving on a Shoestring update.  And my, how things have changed since my last post…

As you may recall, I had three savings goals last year: Project Cruise 2012, Mission Mini Van, and my annual Cha-Ching! Christmas Club savings.

It was exciting to share with you all that Mission Mini Van was a success and we were able to check it off our list.  We are still enjoying the blessing of owning our very first mini van.  (Especially with baby #3 on the way!)

Which leads me to the next change in our Savings Journey.

As you know, we have been putting aside money monthly for about 2 years now so that we could celebrate our 10 year anniversary with a cruise.  (We took a cruise on our honeymoon and fell in love.  With cruises.  Not each other…in case you were confused. :))

One thing we did not take into consideration when making our plans is the possibility that we may have a newborn baby right around our 10 year anniversary date. {Life is funny sometimes, isn’t it?}

Needless to say, this has changed things up a bit for us.

So, Wes and I have spent some time considering how to navigate this change in plans.  Two things we know for sure:

1) We still want to take a cruise someday.

2) We want to use the money that’s been saved up for something FUN…even if it isn’t for a cruise yet.

So here is our Plan B: I used a little bit of the money that was set aside to reserve a get away for us to celebrate our anniversary (via a hot LivingSocial deal!).  We are actually heading away to Maryland for a few days next week (pre-baby!).  I’m very excited about this…and still have the cruise to look forward to down the road.

In the meantime, Wes and I decided that we would be happy to use the money that we set aside for a FUN home improvement project (no new gutters or roofs or driveways…thankyouverymuch.)

So here is Plan B Step 2: We’ve been wanting built-in bookshelves since we moved into our house a year and a half ago.  We are still waiting on an estimate, but it looks like we have enough money set aside to get this project done.

In the end, we are hoping to have two built-ins next to our fireplace that look a little something like this:

Ullswater traditional family room

traditional family room design by other metros design-build Blue Sky Building Company

How fun is that?  (Even if it isn’t a cruise…)

I have one more exciting update to share with you all on our Saving on a Shoestring adventure.  However, this post is already about twice as long as I intended, so I will share with your Part 2 tomorrow night, how does that sound?

TO BE CONTINUED…
