3 Days to an Organized Christmas: Ready to Wrap! (Day 3)

3 Days to an Organized Christmas

It’s Day 3 of our 3 Days to an Organized Christmas Challenge!

Let’s organize our stuff today.

A couple of years ago, I created my very first Christmas Wrapping Station. With $12 and a few hours, I had a very practical new system for storing gift bags and boxes, wrapping paper, and supplies that completely simplified my Christmas wrapping process.  It helped eliminate the stress of trying to hide all of my supplies and gifts in my closet as I had done in the past. It was one of the BEST ways that I have ever prepared for Christmas.

Whether or not you have space for a Christmas wrapping station, ask yourself today “Can I simplify my Christmas wrapping process?” You might want to consider stocking up on gift bags at the Dollar Store or even using pillowcases to wrap gifts like my Mom taught me to save time on Christmas wrapping. I also recommend checking out this post with Gift Wrap Storage ideas.

Or maybe you LOVE wrapping gifts and want to be even more creative this year. May I suggest taking a look at my Mom’s Gift Wrapping Ideas series? She is full of super fun and simple tips to add a little pizzazz to your gifts.

Either way, take today to check your supplies and make a list of any items you need to buy.

Supplies:

-Scotch Tape

-Wrapping Paper

-Gift Bags

-Gift Boxes

-Tissue paper

-Gift Tags and Labels

-Ribbons

-Bows

-You might want to take time to consider any supplies you’ll need for handmade gifts this year as well.

As for me, my Christmas wrapping station needs a little TLC as it has collected a few random items since last Christmas. I’m going to tackle that today and get it gift-wrap ready. I’m excited!

Are you ready to wrap?

I’ll be sharing my gift wrap station progress via Instagram and The Merry Little Christmas Project Facebook page and I’d love for you to join me! I’ll be using the hashtag #MerryLittleChristmasProject if you’d like to do the same.

Here’s the rest of the series in case you missed it:

3 Days to an Organized Christmas

It’s Day 2 of our 3 Days to an Organized Christmas Challenge!

If you are just joining us, you can find Day 1 of the Challenge here.

I suppose it’s possible that beautiful isn’t the word you would use to describe your budget – but let’s organize ours today anyway. 🙂

I’ve heard from SO many of you that you do NOT want Christmas to be about the “stuff” this year.

Me too!

Of course, Christmas IS about giving, so a budget is still important. But no matter how much or how little you have to spend, I encourage you to consider ways to simplify in this area this year.

{Psst…did I mention that my ebook The Merry Little Christmas Project – 5 Words that Will Transform Your Christmas is coming out SOON? In it, I share some very specific ways that I’ve learned to simplify Christmas and cut back on spending. Stay tuned…}

Most importantly, please don’t spend money that you don’t have. But even just as important is this – don’t let society tell you what you HAVE to give. That is a personal decision that each of us need to make.

To be quite honest, I’m not sure who decided that MORE is better at Christmastime, but I’m pretty sure more is just MORE.  Like the year we almost didn’t have a Christmas tree, my desire is to embrace the LESS this year and I invite you to join me.

christmas-gift-budget

To help me with my budgeting, I’ve created a Christmas Gift Budget Tracker that has worked wonders for me in tracking my gifts and budget each year.  If you’d like to use it, I’m giving it away free to all of my Christmas Deals Newsletter subscribers. If you already a subscriber, you should have received an email this morning with this and my Christmas Gift Pocket Planner printable as my gift to you.

If you aren’t a subscriber yet, click here to sign up. After you activate your email address, the goodies should arrive in your email box right away! Then be on the watch for one email a day from me with all the best Christmas deals that I’ve found – just one more way to stre-e-e-e-tch your dollars!

If you’d prefer to track your budget and gifts via an app, you can check out some of the apps that were suggested by our Merry Little Christmas Project Facebook community here. Let me know if you have any other favorites!

My challenge to you today?

Take some time to look at your Christmas budget. Determine how much you want to spend and begin to track your spending via the planner that you choose.

Are you ready to start dreaming of a Merry Little Christmas (on a budget)?

I am!

I’m sitting down with my budget tracker, gift pocket planner and yes – a cup of coffee – in a bit and beginning to budget!  I’ll be sharing my progress via Instagram and The Merry Little Christmas Project Facebook page and I’d love for you to join me! I’ll be using the hashtag #MerryLittleChristmasProject if you’d like to do the same.

If you didn’t get a chance to join us last night on The Merry Little Christmas Project Facebook page, we had a great time sharing ideas for simplifying Christmas and making it more meaningful. There’s still time to join the conversation. Come join us!

3 Days to an Organized Christmas: Dreaming and Planning (Day 1)

3 Days to an Organized Christmas

It’s Day 1 of our 3 Days to an Organized Christmas Challenge!

Today, let’s organize our brains.

One thing that I’ve discovered in my thirty-mumble-mumble years on life is that if I write something down, I am about 10 times more likely to actually follow through on it. If I don’t write it down, it’s likely to get filed away in that “Wishful Thinking” section of my brain.

So if I want to really have a Merry Little Christmas, I think it just makes sense that I need to take some time to write down how I’m hoping and wishing our holiday season will turn out.

So I made this handy little planner:

MLC Planner

The planner asks a few questions to help us start dreaming and planning together.

#1. My focus area this Christmas:

Don’t try to do it all. If you want to Do Christmas Well, you’ll be completely overwhelmed if you try to change everything at once. What area would you like to improve this year? Gift giving? Traditions? Decorations? Write it down.

#2. One way I want to simplify this Christmas season:

I think most of us would agree that Christmas gets more stressful than it needs to be. What is the area that you find most stressful about Christmas? Write it down.

#3. One way I want to make this holiday season more meaningful:

Christmas isn’t about the presents, friends. For me, it is a very meaningful holiday. It is a day to celebrate my faith in Jesus and I want to honor that through the entire season. No matter your faith though, we can all find ways to make the season more meaningful as we think of ways to bless others.  Write down a way that you want to do that this year.

#4. Specific ways I can plan to make more time to savor Christmas:

If we want to make this Christmas season merry, we are going to need to find ways to cut back on the busy-ness of life. How can you do that this year? Ask a friend to watch your kids while you wrap gifts? Limit your time on the internet or watching TV?  Clear your calendar during certain days so you are free to enjoy the season? Write down your ideas.

There is a second page in the planner that is blank. That’s for you to do with whatever you’d like. Have fun with it!

Please note: The planner is in color, so if you’d rather print it in black and white be sure to change your settings before you print.

Pssst…stay tuned for the BIG announcement coming SOON!

So this is happening. #yikes #finishingtouches #comingsoon #firstebook #giddy #nervous #MerryLittleChristmas

How to Be Okay with Last Minute Christmas Stress

How-to-handle-last-minute-christmas-stress

Join A Stress Free Christmas course and community. Click here to learn more.

This question came from Pamela on our Merry Little Christmas Project Facebook page today:

My family had a wonderful, unexpected week long visit by a family member from out if state. Now I’m scrambling to tie up loose ends and it feels overwhelming. Any suggestions on how to complete my decorating , shopping and errands while keeping the spirit of Christmas? I feel like all of my planning was just not good enough and I’m trying not to feel discouraged.

As soon as I read it, I knew I had to write this post that’s been brewing in me over the past few days anyway.

You see, as much as I’ve planned and prepped and strategized over the past few months and focused on Doing Christmas Well with our MLC community, I still have quite a few items that haven’t been crossed off my To Do list. As Pamela shared, sometimes life pops up with unexpected (and even welcome) surprises and all the planning in the world doesn’t accomodate for the interruptions to our Christmas prep.

For me, I have to admit that Christmas is the very busiest season of the year for me. I put in long hours as someone whose blog focuses on saving money on your Christmas shopping. And while I LOVE helping others stretch their dollars, it can make for a hectic Christmas season no matter how much I plan ahead. I am not complaining about this – it’s just the reality of my life!

So, as a result, this is what met me this past week as I went to tackle my wrapping that hasn’t been done yet:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Confession: I still have some Christmas prep ahead of me.

So, here is the choice I have to face:

Let my last minute Christmas stresses take the joy out of Christmas.

or

Find a way to be Okay with the fact that I’m not as prepared for Christmas as I hoped to be.

This is important, friends.

All of your planning will only sabotage your joy if your expectations for yourself are too lofty.

Please don’t let that happen.

Life is full and messy and imperfect – and so Christmas is too. Embrace it. It’s likely that not everything will go according to your timeline. Pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished and move on.

And so, after thinking through my options, I am committing to choose JOY in the chaos. Want to join me? Here are a few tips on how you can do the same:

1. Write it ALL down.

Get out a piece of paper and a pen and write down everything that still needs to done before 12/25. Then go ahead and cross off anything on your list that is unnecessary. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

2. Make it a party.

Have wrapping to do? Pop in a movie, make yourself a cup of cocoa and enjoy the process. Have friends who’d like to join the party? Even better.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A couple of my friends and I had a little Christmas To Do List party last week. It’s way more fun that way.

3. Take Shortcuts.

Wrap those gifts in dollar store gift bags, or even better, pillowcases! Have a 2 Hour Christmas Cookie baking party. Have breakfast for dinner (it’s easy!). Find ways to cut corners. You have my permission.

4. Delegate.

You don’t have to be Super _____ (Mom, Grandma, Dad, Sister, Aunt, fill in the blank.) If there’s something on your list that someone else can do, ask them! (In all honesty, my husband is a better shopper than I am, so I’ve been asking him to be in charge of some of the shopping!)

5. PAUSE to enjoy.

When Christmas is all over, it won’t be the lack of beautiful wrapping that you regret. It will be NOT taking time to savor the moment. Put away the To Do list and read that Christmas book with your kids, watch that favorite Christmas movie, sing Christmas carols, play in the snow, light a candle for Advent, take a ride to look at Christmas lights.  Do it – you won’t regret it.

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 4.51.48 PM

Hot Cocoa and a Christmas book are always a good idea.

5. Take note for next year.

Don’t let this year’s stress be in vain. Take note of the things that you want to do differently next year. Like the year I cried on Christmas, let this year make next year better. (There is a section for this in the planner!)

6. Most of all, give yourself grace.

Enough said.

Now pardon me – I have some wrapping to do. Bring it on!

How about you? Do you have any tips to help with last minute Christmas stress?

6 Christmas Cookies in 2 Hours

Two hours. It’s the magic number for many moms of kids-who-still-take-naps. Two hours of uninterrupted time to accomplish a whole lot.

I decided to challenge myself recently to see how many Christmas cookies I could make in 2 hours – I’m very motivated by deadlines – particularly when the cause of them is sleeping soundly in the other room.

I am happy to say that in just a little over 2 hours, I had all the prep done for 6 delicious Christmas cookies and they were all either freshly baked, in the oven or ready to go. The cleanup on the other hand did not get done in that time frame – Super Mom I am not.

A little disclaimer: I am not an expert when it comes to freezer baking. However, in our family, Christmas cookies don’t last real long in the freezer, so I haven’t had to worry about it too much. I typically just place them in an airtight container with a couple layers of wax paper. However, I think it would be a good idea to separate cookies into gallon baggies before doing so since the flavors of some of our cookies have seemed to mix a bit. This would help to prevent that from happening.

To make things simpler for you, I created a Master List of Ingredients and the 6 cookie recipes here. If you’d like to give this a go, I wanted to simplify your experience as much as possible! Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to find some helpful steps in making your freezer baking session a success.

Here were the results:

Recipe #1: The Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies pictured above are a new recipe I discovered this year. These babies really do melt in your mouth and couldn’t be easier (hint: they use a cake mix!)

Salted-Caramel-Pretzel-Brownies-576x1024

Recipe #2: I am partial to these Salted Caramel Pretzel Brownies. The pretzels and caramel break up the richness of the brownies and they freeze really well.

Dark-Chocolate-Chip-Granola-Cookies-576x1024

Recipe #3: I discovered these Dark Chocolate Chip Granola cookies last year and instantly fell in love. They are the perfect combo of Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal cookies – and again, really easy.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Recipe #4: Another new recipe this year and incredibly easy. These are the cookies for those coconut lovers in your life.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

Recipe #5: What baking session would be complete without some sort of Peanut Butter and Chocolate concoction? I have been wanting to make these Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cookies forever – and this recipe did NOT disappoint. Warning: These are super easy to just pop in your mouth for breakfast (ask me how I know).

Reese's Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats

Recipe #6: My husband’s new favorite cookie/bar. I’m with him – these are awesome. It’s like a suped-up version of your regular Rice Krispie treats and about 1000x better.

Here is my “6 Christmas Cookies in 2 Hours” Baking Method:

Step 1: Download the Ingredient List and Recipes here and print them out to make shopping and baking easier. If you don’t plan on making all of the recipes, you can just select which pages you’d like to print.

Step 2: Use the ingredient list to check your pantry and go shopping if need be.

Step 3: Set up yourself for success before beginning your Baking Spree. I decided it would be easier to set up “stations”. I laid out all of the supplies and ingredients/recipes that I needed on my kitchen table like this:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I also had a mixing station and used my counter as my ‘prep for baking’ station (cookie sheets and pans).

Step 4: Prep your ingredients. Crush the pretzels, dice the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and open the Sweetened Condensed Milk. (If you plan to bake the Reese’s Cookies today, you should go ahead and take the wrappers off 16-18 peanut butter cups now too.)

Step 5: Fill your sink with soapy water. It will come in handy when you need to rinse any bowls or spoons during your baking session.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Step 6: Get baking! I tried to order the recipes in the easiest way possible, but feel free to switch them up if it seems better to you.

It is up to you if you decide to bake all of the cookies or if you opt to freeze some of the dough. I did a little of both and enjoyed having both options in my freezer.

If you do give this a try, let me know how it goes and whether you were able to complete it all in one naptime too. 🙂

Oh, I forgot a step!

Step 7: Plan some get-togethers with friends so you don’t eat all of these cookies all by yourself. 🙂 (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

I shared this with Thrifty Thursday.

Random Acts of Kindness, Potato Chips and More Grace, Please

December 14th, 2014 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.25.48 AM

This past week, my family enjoyed surprising others with random acts of Christmas kindness.

We had a blast leaving little gifts and treasures to be found around town. I loved watching my kids take delight in giving, but I was surprised at something else that I began to feel. Something I didn’t expect.

I was prepared for the experience to be fun – joyful even.

And it most definitely was.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What I did not expect was this stirring in my heart that did not resemble joy.

It started when my husband and I were discussing who the recipient of the grocery store gift card that we had just purchased should be. We scanned the store, carefully analyzing who looked like they could use come Christmas joy – trying not to make eye contact. We considered the woman behind the deli counter. She looked like a hard worker. But what if our surprise wasn’t as exciting to her as we hoped? What if she just thought we were weird when we walked up to the counter and handed her our gift??

Then, as my sons placed their quarters in the gumball machine, I loved picturing the face of a little one – delighted to find this hidden treasure. But then – what if there was actually a temper tantrum involved and our surprise was just another win for a spoiled child? That’s not nearly as much fun to picture.

This feeling that stirred in me was not one of kindness. It was more like fear.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I worried that our gifts would find themselves in the hands of the wrong person. Someone who wouldn’t value them like we hoped.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And, then there was the chance that whoever happened upon our gift of quarters in the laundry room might seize the opportunity and leave none behind for others.

What if those who were meant to be offered a little HOPE this Christmas, instead took advantage of an opportunity meant to be shared with others?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What if our gifts were not received with gratitude?

What if?

At first, I wondered if this fear I was feeling meant that this kind of random giving is wasteful – maybe even unnecessary.

And then this thought struck me:

Grace is risky.

Grace is a gift. And by definition, a gift is something that has not been earned. That type of giving is indeed risky. Possibly even wasteful.

And then this story came to mind.

Years ago, my son – then 5 years old – asked for some potato chips after we had finished a meal – even though he hadn’t finished his dinner. That night, for whatever reason, I chose to make an exception to the norm and allow him to eat the chips.

I decided that I could turn this unusual situation into a teachable moment. So I said, “Griffin, do you know what this is called, when you are given something you didn’t really deserve?  It’s grace.”

Griffin nodded, then proceeded to enjoy every last crumb of the chips. When he was done, he turned his blue eyes up to me and said sweetly, “More grace please!”

Isn’t that how we all feel about grace? One serving just isn’t enough.

Truth be told – I am served up heapings of grace every day. I am surrounded by good things that I did nothing to deserve and so often take for granted.

Maybe you have been served up similar graces?

Have a job that pays the bills?

More grace please.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Have loving and supportive family and friends?

More grace please.

Good health?

More grace please.

Have enough money to put some gifts under the tree?

More grace please.

Have clean running water, a roof over your head and no fear of where the next meal will come?

More grace please.

RACK Sunset

Get to enjoy the beauty of yet another sunset?

More grace please.

Friends – I gobble up grace each day like it’s the whole bag of chips, lick my fingers clean and rarely remember that it is just that.

Grace. A gift.

This kind of grace is offered by the most extravagant giver of them all. The King who risked it all to be born in a stable and rescue the world with His own life. Because He loves us.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There is no greater act of Christmas Kindness than this one. I was surprised by HOPE the day I found it, though I likely did not express nearly enough gratitude and did absolutely nothing to deserve it.

Because this kind of extravagant grace has been served up to me, may I never hold back in passing on kindness, hope, and more grace, please to others.

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.25.48 AM

That’s my son’s quarter in there. By the time we left the store, the quarter was gone. Made us happy to imagine. 🙂

We popped in another quarter and imagined another happy surprise.

Also, if you’d like a printable “You’ve been RACK’ed” tag, I had one made for you. Click here to download it.
