The Cha-Ching Challenge: How I Broke the #1 Rule of Saving $$ + Link Up!

Welcome to the weekly Cha-Ching Challenge!

Did you find a HOT deal this week that you just want to share?  You’ve come to the right place!  Add a link to your post detailing your savings for the week OR your favorite deal of the week. I may even choose one participating blog to highlight next week right here on Cha-Ching on a Shoestring.

Check out my savings for the week below:

I confessed yesterday on Facebook that I broke the #1 rule to saving money at the grocery store this week.  There were lots of great guesses as to what the rule is and whole bunch of you guessed correctly:

I shopped HUNGRY.  For some reason, I thought it was a good idea to skip lunch before heading to the store.  This is never a good idea where I’m concerned.  I went into the store with a relatively short list and somehow before I exited the store, there were items in my cart that never have made it in there before.

All that to say, I did not do real well saving money this week.  I will add that I am still giving myself some grace during this newborn stage.  So yes, that means buying some items that I don’t usually buy just for the sake of convenience.

But just keeping it real, y’all.  (I did however score two packages of CoverGirl mascara, a Diet Coke 12-pack and a pack of gum for only $1.02 at CVS this week, so all hope for me is not lost!)

Savings from coupons and store sales: $44.35

  • Giant: Spent $134.55.  Saved $19.86.
  • CVS: Spent $1.02.  Saved $24.49.

Savings from ‘Free Money’: $10

  • I redeemed some Swag Bucks for $10 in Amazon gift cards.

TOTAL SAVINGS:$54.35

TOTAL SAVINGS THIS YEAR: $1781.34

It’s been a bit of a challenging week around here.  In addition to the we-have-a-newborn-factor, we also had a sick-three-year-old factor.  I had to remind myself that this is not a season for getting things done, but for being in the moment.

I did make it to Giant this week (with all three boys in tow!) to use some of my free milk coupons that expired and grabbed a few other things while I was there.

Oh…and speaking of being in the moment, we had some first smiles this week that I caught on camera.

Yep.  Life is good.

Savings from coupons and store sales: $29.41

  • Giant: Spent $28.46.  Saved $29.41. (Highlights included three free gallons of milk, free Mentos gum and M&M’s for $0.17.)

Savings from Cutting Costs:

  • I saved $7.99 by taking advantage of a 30 day FREE trial from Netflix.

TOTAL SAVINGS:$37.31

TOTAL SAVINGS THIS YEAR: $1726.99

I’ve decided that Aldi is my HERO during these crazy, hazy newborn days.  I did another mad dash through the store the other day with two little ones in tow.  (Thankfully, the little one slept the whole time!)  I just love that I don’t have to comparison shop while I’m there and that I can save money even without using coupons.

I did make a quick trip to Landis as well…mostly because I could score Breyers ice cream for only $0.88!

We still have some of the freezer meals that were given to us after the baby was born, so I just needed to shop for a few basics this week.

Savings from coupons and store sales: $41

  • Aldi: Spent $37.82.  Saved about $20. (Highlights were pineapples for $0.99, bread for $0.69 and carrots for $0.99.)
  • Landis: Spent $15.18.  Saved $21.  (Highlights were $0.88 Breyers ice cream and Miracle Whip for $0.99.)

TOTAL SAVINGS:$41

TOTAL SAVINGS THIS YEAR: $1689.59

We have been so blessed over the last few weeks since Cade was born.  I have not had to make a meal yet due to our friends’ and family’s generosity.  (And I’ll admit that I’ve been enjoying it!)

I did, however, make it to Giant this week to take advantage of the Kellogg’s deal that is going on, so I thought I’d share my savings.

Savings from coupons and store sales: $77.50

  • Giant: Spent $33.58.  Saved $77.50.  Scored 24 boxes of cereal and 7 FREE gallons of milk, plus several other items.  Plus I’ll get two FREE movie tickets!

TOTAL SAVINGS:$77.50

TOTAL SAVINGS THIS YEAR: $1648.59

It’s been quite a week around here.  I am due with baby boy any day now and my sister and her two daughters are here from Texas for the week to help (and to hopefully meet their new nephew/cousin before they leave!)

So in the midst of the hectic-joy-filled-craziness, any effort to track my saving and spending has gone out the window.  In fact, I actually think I paid full price for some cereal the other day (gasp!).

But you know what?  I’m Ok with it.  One of the reasons I work so hard to save the rest of the year is so that when times like this come up, I can allow myself to relax and focus on the moment rather than the current sales cycles that week.

Oh…and I can’t say that I didn’t save any money this week.  See that smoothie in the picture?  It was half-price.

Oh yeah.

Welcome to the weekly

Cha-Ching Challenge Highlight!

This week’s highlight is Homemaking Mom!

Roxanna writes:

I recently became a stay-at-home mom and I became inspired to create Homemaking Mom in response to others’ questions about couponing, how I am able to feed my family of five for $60 a week, how I find success selling on Ebay, hosting successful yard sales (this spring my mom, sis and I made $800 from a one-day yard sale) and that type of thing.

Check out her post sharing how she paid only $65 for $177 worth of groceries at Harris Teeter and Aldi.  Awesome job, Roxanna!
