How to Make a Bird Seed Ornament

This gift is for the birds – literally. 🙂

Seriously now, are these bird seed ornaments cute or what?  And it really doesn’t get much easier than this.  Four little steps are all it takes to create these little beauties and the kids can even help!

We decided to create some as Christmas gifts this year, but I’m guessing the birds would enjoy them any time of the year.

What you’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup birdseed (Seed for small birds works great.)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 small envelope of Knox gelatine
  • twine or string
  • cookie cutters or mason jar lids
  • wax paper

How to Make a Bird Seed Ornament

Step 1: Mix together the envelope of gelatine with 1/4 cup of water and bring to a simmer while stirring. Continue stirring until the gelatine is dissolved, then remove from heat and cool for a minute.  Stir in the bird seed, adding a little more if there is liquid still in the bottom of the pan.

Step 2: Lay the cookie cutter on the wax paper, and fill half way with the bird seed mixture.

Step 3: Cut your twine, knot the end and push the knot down into your birdseed.  Then continue filling with bird seed, covering the end of your twine and knot.  Push the bird seed evenly into the cookie cutter until it’s full.

Step 4: Let them sit overnight to be sure they set.  When it comes time to take the ornaments out of the mold, be careful to push them out slowly so you don’t lose any pieces!

I placed ours in a mason jar and found this lovely Cardinal gift tag from the Graphics Fairy.

There you have it – so simple and yet so lovely!

Wrapping Idea #13

Wrapping with fabric has been one of my favorite too, too fun wrapping projects. This box was wrapped like swaddling a baby in a blanket. I used torn strips of random Christmas fabric to wrap around the blanketed gift, leaving a pocket to slip in a Christmas card.

DSD Scarf Wrapping

I wrapped this gift with a silk scarf. You can check out this video with a brief tutorial on how easy it is to create this lovely holiday gift wrap with built-in pocket for a card.

DSD Scarf Wrapping Lincoln

OR– instead of a card, how about slipping in a picture the recipient will treasure? That’s two gifts in one!

And there you have it: too, too fun wrapping idea #13.

The Merry Little Christmas Project: The Year We {Almost} Didn’t Have a Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree

Want to Do Christmas Well with me? LIKE The Merry Little Christmas Project on Facebook and be a part of our community! We are working together to make Christmas simpler, organized and more meaningful. Come join us!

The Christmas our first son was 17 months, we opted not to get a Christmas tree.

We were first time parents and in awe of the amount of havoc a small child could create in mere milli-seconds.  The idea of setting up a tall prickly tree  full of glass and lights and things that were fun to break did not seem in our best interest.  Visions of Christmas Tree Armageddon danced in our heads and we opted to forego the possible devastation.

Then about 5 days before Christmas, I suddenly realized – I really really wanted a Christmas tree.  I mentioned it to my husband and he admitted he was feeling the same way.

Christmas Tree 2

So we all jumped in our red Jeep Cherokee and drove down the street to a Christmas tree lot – where thankfully, there were still a few of the tall, prickly things left – and we snagged one.

Christmas Tree

And we set it up outside on our deck – safe from the grasp of those precious, ruinous little fingers.  We threw some white lights on it and sat in our warm little garage apartment gazing at its beauty.

It was LESS and it was enough.  We were happy.

I’ve been thinking lately.

Who decided that MORE is better at Christmastime?

It’s so easy to find ourselves caught up in the:

“How much is enough________to make us happy?” (Stuff, activity, noise, Christmas bonuses, fill in the blank with any number of things).

What if the answer to that is – Less?

What if in our quest for More what we really want is Less?

Like the time I cried on Christmas morning, we suddenly realize that more is just…more.

So I’ve been asking myself, “How do I embrace this idea of celebrating LESS this Christmas season?”

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Whoville

But this… this sound wasn’t sad. Why… this sound sounded glad. Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, was singing, without *any* presents at all! He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming, it *came*! Somehow or other… it came just the same.

Like the invincible Who people, can we believe that LESS is enough at Christmastime?

Since we likely won’t have Christmas stolen from us by a green, hairy monster, here are a few of my ideas for finding the LESS in Christmas:

  • Turn off the distractions.  Maybe set aside a part of each day that will be screen free?
  • Give yourself permission to say, “No.”  There are only so many activities, parties, and fa-la-la-la-la-ing that need to be on your calendar.  Say no to the rest.
  • Candlelight.  If you haven’t tried it, do.  Be prepared to have arguments from your children over who gets to blow out the candle when you are done.  But once you get past that part, it’s lovely and I’m quite sure it has magical powers to slow down time and active children.
  • Buy less gifts.
  • Give yourself grace if your home does not look like a Pottery Barn magazine – it’s ok.  It’s called LIFE.
  • If you can, find time to gather your family together and watch the snow fall  or sit around your lit-up Christmas tree in the dark.  And a sleepover around the tree is always a good idea.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

See?  Magical powers.

(Our new favorite tradition is reading from our Jesse Tree devotional each night by candlelight.)

How about you?  How do you embrace the idea of LESS at Christmastime?

And may I add – Possibly the idea that  less is MORE came from the most classic Christmas story of all?

Bethlehem Scene

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2: 8 – 12

(By the way, in the middle of writing this, I had to grab ornaments from the clutches of our third child’s precious ruinous little fingers.  We still do love us a Christmas tree – dangers and all.)

Pic Christmas Font Tags

What excitement there was in the air when I discovered this free Christmas font!

I quickly downloaded the font onto my computer, then I typed abcdefg… (both uppercase and lowercase) to find the images I wanted for my  tags.  I used Word shapes (rectangles) to create tags and inserted the chosen images using a text box.  I then increased the size of the font until it fit just right in the tag.

Examples:

DSD Christmas Alphabet

And there you have it.

Just think of all the mix and match options for shapes, colors, sizes,  etc.

Have fun!

Christmas Cookie Recipes

Want to Do Christmas Well with me? LIKE The Merry Little Christmas Project on Facebook and be a part of our community! We talk Christmas baking, decorating, organization and more. Come join us!

I had a little Christmas Baking Day last week in an attempt to fill my freezer with Christmas cookies.

I consider it a big success in that most of them actually made it into my freezer!

I wanted to share the recipes with you to add to your Christmas baking stash.  Click through the links below to find the recipe for each:

Salted Caramel Pretzel Brownies

Salted Caramel Pretzel Brownies:

These are delicious – a perfect blend of sweet and salty.  They also freeze quite nicely.

Christmas Cookies

Peanut Butter Blossoms:

These classics are possibly my all-time favorites!  They don’t freeze quite as well as the others, so you may need to eat these right away. 🙂  Thankfully, it’s very easy to mix up another batch!

Dark Chocolate Chip Granola Cookies

Dark Chocolate Chip Granola Cookies:

I discovered these lovelies last year.  Super easy, super yummy and freeze great!

Christmas Cookies

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cake Mix Cookies:

These are the easiest cookies I’ve ever made and they are really good with a big glass of milk. (It’s hard to go wrong with Peanut Butter and Chocolate, right?)  I’ve also been pleased with how well they freeze.

Christmas Cookies

Twixy Shortbread Bars:

These cookies were the most time-intensive (have you every tried to make dulce de leche before?)  But I think they are officially my favorite new cookie.  If you like Twix bars, you’ll LOVE these!

Check out more from The Merry Little Christmas Project.
