My $100 LEGO Center Makeover

LEGO Center

Simple LEGO Organization Project

I love LEGOs.

I hate unorganized LEGOs.

It’s a complicated relationship.

After Christmas this year, when I was in the midst of a de-cluttering frenzy, I decided that ALL the LEGOs had to go. OR I needed an entirely new system for them.

My love for LEGOs won out and I have to admit that I’m quite glad that it did.

My first step in my LEGO overhaul was a call for help to my good friend Heidi. Heidi understands my LEGO conundrum well. She is the Mom of a LEGO lover of epic proportions (as you can read in her post here), so she has organized her fair share of LEGOs in her day. She also has an eye for detail and design that I lack – she’s a handy friend to have around.

Plus she is really fun to go to IKEA with.

IKEA!!

A photo posted by Kaley Ehret (@kaleyehret) on Feb 21, 2015 at 9:00am PST

I already owned the IKEA Expedit shelves (now known as KALLAX), so it made sense to start there and create a center with what I already have. In the name of “research”, Heidi and I left our kiddos with our hubbies (except for Heidi’s 5 month old who is still too little to distract from the mission at hand – except by looking cute) and skipped off like giddy school girls to the lovely land of IKEA.

After drooling over perusing the IKEA showroom, we made our decisions. We ended up deciding against the KALLAX drawers and instead determined that using Sterilite containers would work best for sorting the LEGOs. Plus they fit very nicely in the cubbies. I also snagged two of these fun red Marius stools for just $5 each. I mean really how could I resist such a cute bargain?!

LEGO Storage

Heidi suggested that we use Washi tape to add a fun little touch to the drawers, rather than spend extra money on fancy storage (she’s smart like that).

LEGO Storage

Plus it’s a fun way to color code the drawers – see? (The rainbow drawer is intended for mini-figures and other miscellaneous pieces.)

I like to keep things real around here, so in full disclosure, after some wear and tear, the Washi tape that I purchased is not sticking well to the containers and I may need to re-do this with a thicker tape or simply label them. But I just didn’t want you to miss their cuteness.

I also wanted to hang something functional on the wall. In the end, we decided on a magnetic dry erase board. I can picture many, many silly pictures being drawn on this board over the years. And plenty of higher math too, of course.

LEGO Magnets

Another idea inspired by Heidi  was to turn LEGO Duplo bricks into magnets. I just bought some adhesive round magnets and fastened them to the back of a few bricks. Super simple way to incorporate the LEGO theme!

LEGO Manual Storage

I knew that I would need a place to store the manuals and this hanging file box from Target worked perfectly.

Aren’t organized manuals just so happy?

Here is the breakdown of my spending:

IKEA: (2) Red Marius stools = $9.98

Amazon: 10 x 10 Brick Building Plates – 4 pack ($24.95)

Target.com: (3) Sterilite 3-Drawer Containers (on sale for $8.09 + 5% Target REDCard discount = $23.06

Target.com: Hanging File Box – $13.99 + 5% Target REDCard discount = $13.29

Michaels:

-Washi Tape Dispenser – $7.99 + 20% discount coupon = $6.39
-Adhesive Magnets – $3.29 + 20% discount coupon = $2.63

Walmart: Magnetic Dry Erase Board – $19.96

Total: $100.26

Here’s the thing.

It’s taken me almost 10 years of motherhood to realize how few toys our kids need. The key is figuring out how to make space for them to play with the toys they do enjoy. In reality, I could have just bought some dollar store containers for the LEGOs and called it a day. But I was willing to spend a little more money if it meant making a functional space for them to enjoy the LEGOs for years to come. And based on the hours of play I heard behind their doors after completing this project, I am confident this is money well spent.

LEGO Play Center

In the end, I’m ready to make my relationship with LEGOs official. I have nothing but love in my heart for them now. They are brilliant, genius, adorable little things – and I’m keeping them around for a long time.

Oh – and I’ll keep the LEGOs too. 🙂

My Monthly Missions {The Merry Little Living Project}

March 1st, 2015 By Kaley

My Monthly Missions

How is that February is the shortest month but feels the longest? Spring is so close I can taste it, but the snow and the temperatures just keep falling here in the frigid Northeast.

This quote I read the other day offered me some much needed hope:

“No winter lasts forever, No spring skips its turn.” – Hal Borland

It’s coming, friends. I promise.

In the meantime, I am choosing to create simple, joyful life. This past month, I asked myself four questions:

  • What is one way I can simplify life this month?
  • What is one way I can practice a healthy habit this month?
  • What is one way I can organize life this month?
  • What is one way I can bring joy to life this month?

Here’s what I came up with:

How I simplified life:

How I Cut Meal Prep in Half with my KitchenAid

I’m actually very excited about my new trick with my KitchenAid mixer. It has completely simplified meals and that is my very favorite thing to simplify.

How I practiced a healthy habit:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Remember when I said we keep things simple around here? Well, here’s the proof. My healthy habit this month was to make my bed every day. As far as I remember, I was successful every day except one – in which I was very tempted to make my bed right before getting into it that night. But I refrained.

It’s a habit that only takes a minute, but really can change the whole feel of a room. You Every Day Bed Makers really know what you are doing, don’t you?

How I organized life:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m actually very excited about my organization project this past month – but it still needs a couple finishing touches before I share. The picture above is a sneak peek. Look for a post soon!

If you’d like some organizational inspiration, though, you should definitely check out this post that my Mom wrote:

Visual Learner Organization Files

How I brought joy to life:

Chicken Noodle

Is it wrong that the thing that brought me a good deal of joy this past month required a friend to be very sick? In January I had made up a big batch of Chicken Noodle Soup and put half in the freezer. I wanted to have some on hand to share with anyone that might need a little pick me up. But then I waited and waited and waited – and no one got sick! What’s up with that? (Twisted, right?)

But then – a friend came down quite sick last week. So I thawed the soup, made up a little basket of get well goodies and dropped them off on her doorstep. I hope it brought her as much joy as it brought me!

So now I want to know:

What are YOUR Monthly Missions for March?

I’ve been really happy with this new strategy for planning simplicity and joy into my life and I’d love for you to join me.

If you sign up for the Merry Little Living Project email newsletter, you’ll receive a free printable Monthly Missions planner in your inbox right away. Then sometime in the next few days, grab your printable,  a cup of coffee and a pencil and map out your missions for the month.

And then – if you’d like a little bit of accountability – share your missions in the comment below. Let’s help each other celebrate Simple, Joyful Life!

I’ll be sharing what my missions are this month in my Merry Little Living Project newsletter so be sure to click here to sign up if you haven’t yet!

How I Made My Peace with LEGOS (Pley LEGO Rental Review)

January 23rd, 2015 By Heidi

Pley.com Review - LEGO Rental

Pley.com Review: LEGO Rental (The Netflix for LEGOS)

My friend Heidi introduced me to a site called Pley.com recently where you can rent LEGO sets. I was completely fascinated. As a Mom who is constantly fighting the battle of “HOW DO I ORGANIZE ALL THESE LEGOS??” – I think the idea is brilliant.

I asked Heidi if she would write a review of her experience with Pley.com and she gladly agreed. I think you’ll find her description super helpful if you’d like to consider the idea of renting LEGOS too!

Here is her review of Pley LEGO Rental:

If you have an elementary school boy (or girl for that matter) then you know the excitement that surrounds LEGOS!  But as a parent you also know the very real struggle of wanting to get your child a toy you know they will love, a toy that is truly beneficial, a toy that teaches them patience and how to follow directions…but the flip side is:

Little. Tiny. Pieces. EVERYWHERE.

There’s the endless thoughts of storage, how do I organize these pieces, how do I corral them? Should I organize by set?  By color?  And then there’s the struggle of keeping up with the instructions so that if it should fall apart (which of course it will) it can be built again. And to top it all off, the mixed feelings of pride and deflation you feel when they build that $80, 900+ piece set in one day.

The struggle is real.

Pley.com Review - LEGO Rental

In a timely discovery just before Christmas, I came across an advertisement for Pley.com – “the Netflix of Legos”.  A place where you could rent Legos – GENIUS!  Of course I looked into it, did my due research and decided this would be the perfect gift for my 9 yr old son for Christmas.  In order to reduce the amount of stuff in our house we have chosen to give our kids experiences rather than stuff, so this fit the bill perfectly for our son. I signed him up for 2 months thinking it would be just the thing to fill his time this winter.

Pleylist - Rent LEGO Sets

On Christmas Day, when we explained to our little guy what this all means, he went right to work setting up his account and getting started.  When you initially set up an account with Pley.com, you create your own Pleylist which is essentially a list of all the sets you’d be interested in building.  You can choose from hundreds of sets either by theme (Architechture, City, Duplo, Friends, Star Wars, Super Heroes, Creator, etc.) or age group.

I’m sure you can imagine how exciting this is to a 9 year old – he filled that Pleylist rather quickly with sets he knew he would never be able to own, probably had resigned himself to never even seeing, only admiring in the LEGO store…all the while exclaiming “whoa – you can get the Death Star, oh wow, you can get the Millenium Falcon – Mom, thank you, thank you!  I can’t wait for it to come!  This is the best Christmas present ever!” Really – that’s a quote – my heart swelled!

LEGO Rental

There are two plans to choose from which start as low as $9.99 per month and my first set came with 2 FREE gifts – a brick separator and LEGO building bracelet which are yours to keep! Our first set was shipped the very day that we signed up and arrived 2 days later!  We received an email notifying us that it was shipped and which set they sent to us. (Note: It appears that the 2 free gifts are no longer included with your first set, so you may want to ask about that first.)

The Pley set arrived in a nice box, the Legos were enclosed in a zippered mesh bag with instructions to dump the pieces in the box.  Original instructions were included along with our FREE brick separator and LEGO building bracelet. Upon building and receiving your set they ask you to log in to your account and report any missing pieces. (I was happy to discover that if you lose a piece there is NO CHARGE!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’ve had our account for 3 weeks now and have received and built 2 sets.  When my son was done with the first set he took all the pieces apart and filled the mesh bag, inserted the instructions, taped up the box and adhered the return shipping label that was included.  We sent our box from the east coast on a Monday and received the new box from California ready for him to build by Friday!  It was so exciting for him to receive his box in the mail and get started on a weekend project.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I really have nothing negative to say about this and already we’ve convinced several friends to sign up.  My son is motivated, he keeps his Pleylist up to date, he’s learning to be responsible for something that belongs to someone else and stay organized.  He’s having so much fun and I really do think it’s been “the best Christmas present ever”!

And that, my friends, is how I made peace with LEGOS.

The Dollar Store Diva: My Super-Simple Secret Recipe for a 4th of July Jello

June 25th, 2014 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

4th of July Jello Flag Recipe

I teach English to adult immigrants and refugees. Many of them are working toward US citizenship. I am so proud of them and grateful to be their “Teacher Nancy”.

I wanted to do something fun to teach my class about the happy American holiday–the 4th of July. So we played our national anthem and went to work.

Oh, how my international students enjoyed this thoroughly American project.

OK, it’s not really a secret since so many people have asked for the recipe for my super simple jello. The secret is actually a surprise ingredient: applesauce. No cold water. Applesauce instead. It’s as easy as that.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As in: a small box of Jello (3 oz. box) will call for one cup boiling water and one cup cold water. Cancel the cold water and replace it with  applesauce. Super simple, right?! The larger box (6 oz. box) calls for two cups of boiling water and two cups of cold water; simply replace the two cups of cold water with the same amount of applesauce. [See note in Step #3 if you use a larger pan.}

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So here you go for a thoroughly American 4th of July Jello:

#1

Choose the red Jello/gelatin flavor of your preference. For the flag Jello, use a 6 oz. package of Jello, and stir in two cups of boiling water until the powder dissolves .

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

 #2

Next stir in two cups of applesauce (I use no-sugar added).

NOT ONE SPECK OF COLD WATER ANYWHERE–only applesauce.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA#3

Pour the mixture into an oblong pan and put it in the refrigerator until it gels.

{You’ll notice in the picture that I used a small oblong pan for my flag. If you use a 13×9″ pan, you’ll want to use an extra 3 oz. box of Jello, thus adding one more cup of boiling water and one more cup of applesauce. The bottom line is that the exact amount of applesauce replaces the exact same amount of cold water.}

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA#4

And now the fun begins!

Place a handful of fresh blueberries over a a thin rectangular layer of whipped topping in the upper lefthand corner.

Use whipped topping to create the white stripes on the flag.  I had just used a Mother’s Day Amazon gift card to buy a Wilton Decorating set; the star tip was perfect for piping the stripes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And there you have it: Isn’t it beautiful?

And aren’t those two women beautiful? {Spoken by a proud teacher.}
Happy 4th of July!

A Peek into Our Summer Fun Planner

Free printable Summer Fun Planner

How to Make a Summer Planner

Over the past few years, I’ve shared a bit about the Summer Fun Planner I use with my kids each year. Each year I try to improve on it just a bit and make it work even better for us.

You could say that my roots as a teacher definitely come out each summer – but I try to make this system one that is helpful and flexible. As much as I like a system, I actually prefer life to be more laid back than structured – especially at summer time!

So here is how we accomplish that in my house:

First, I printed out this free printable Summer Fun Planner. If you’d like one, it’s my gift to you for becoming an email subscriber. Head over here to do so.

Second, I pulled out our binders from last summer. Included in the binder:

-About 10 plastic sleeves

-Three dividers

-A pencil case with a variety of crayons, pencils, etc.

Note: I found all of these items at the Dollar Store last year. No need to spend a fortune!

This is how I labeled the different sections:

Summer Fun Planner

1. Summer Fun:

This is where we keep our Summer Fun To Do list. Using my list of free summer activities for kids and our own ideas, I sat down the other day with my two oldest boys and we each made a bucket list of activities that we’d like to enjoy together over the summer. Then each morning, we each take a turn choosing one activity from our list that we’d like to make happen that day.

(In full disclosure, Mommy may have added “Clean the van” and “Organize something” to the top of her list. At this point, my boys haven’t figured out that this is considered work. Let’s keep that our little secret, mmkay?)

We also worked on adding events to the Summer Fun Planner Calendar so we can keep track of upcoming events we’d like to take advantage of – like $1 Movies at Regal!

2. Reading Rewards:

This is where we track the numerous Reading Rewards programs that are available. Every program has different requirements, so there is a Reading Rewards checklist that comes along with my Summer Fun Planner to help track it all.

3. Boredom Busters:

I had fun finding a variety of printables via Pinterest to tuck into this section. This is a great tool for road trips as well as the perfect offering when you hear those three dreaded words: “Mom, I’m boooored.”

I plan to add more to this section throughout the summer, but here are a few printables I added to ours:

Robot Drawing Prompts

Road Trip Drawing Prompts

Star Wars Coloring Pages

Printable Travel Games

Printable Summer Letters

Random Acts of Kindness Summer List

And that’s it! Nothing fancy, but it offers a sense of routine that is sometimes missing when the kids are out of school.

If you’d like to see more, I shared about our system last year on Philadelphia’s 6abc station. Frankly, my boys stole the show!

The 20 Minute Extra Cash Challenge Day 9 – Easy Tasks = Easy Cash

May 22nd, 2014 By Kaley
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission if you click and make a purchase.

20-Minute-Extra-Cash-Challenge

Welcome to Day 9 of the 20 Minute Extra Cash Challenge!

We are currently working our way through the sites that will become a part of our Daily 20 Minute Extra Cash Checklist.

So far we’ve signed up for and learned easy ways to earn free stuff, gift cards and cash in the following ways:

Earn with your Search Engine

Earn with Emails

Earn with Free Codes

Earn with Apps

What’s New Today?

Today I want to introduce you to one more site that I recently discovered called Quick Rewards. Not only is it very easy to earn cash with Quick Rewards, but there is also no minimum required to cash out! Cash out at any time, as often as you’d like.  Unlike most sites that require you to earn $10 or more to cash out, I was able to transfer just $0.50 into my PayPal account after a few days of earning. I love seeing my little savings tracker pop up a few cents – makes me feel like I really am adding money to my virtual change jar!

Don’t prefer PayPal? You can save up and cash out at as low as $5 for gift cards, including Amazon and eBay, Disney, CVS, Target, Walmart, Kohl’s and more. Oh – and my personal favorite – Dunkin Donuts!

Earn Fast with Easy Tasks:

At first, I found the Quick Rewards site layout a bit overwhelming. But I soon discovered that my favorite section is the “Daily Clicks” section on the left side of the site. This section offers payment for tasks as simple as clicking on a site or watching a quick video. You can even get paid for listening to radio online- which is nice since you can be doing other things while listening.

FYI: I tried one survey and I found it to be not worth my time, so I only recommend giving that a try if you have extra time on your hands.

Insider Tips:

  • I recommend going into your account and opting out of all emails after you sign up. If not, you will receive A LOT of emails. I prefer simply finding opportunities via the Quick Rewards site.
  • If you decide to cash out via PayPal, just a heads up that the password that is requested when you cash out is your Quick Rewards password – NOT your PayPal password. It took me several days to figure that out. 🙂
  • Some earning opportunities offer a certain number of Quick Points rather than a dollar amount. The value of 100 Quick Points is $0.01. Once you earn 100 Quick Points, the system will automatically convert it into cash for you.
  • As I’ve mentioned before, you won’t get rich with these offers, but by completing a few tasks each day during our 20 Minute Challenge, you’ll easily add a few dollars to your Extra Cash monthly earnings.

Click here to sign up for Quick Rewards.

How about you? Can you recommend any other sites that pay you for easy tasks? Leave a comment and let’s help each other out!
